Catherine Marchese studied with both William Polisi and Loren Glickman at the Juilliard School where she earned the Bachelor’s Degree in 1983, followed by the Master’s Degree in 1984. She was awarded a full scholarship to complete her Doctoral work at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, where she was awarded the Diplome Superieur d’Execution .

In 1987, the noted bassoonist, Milan Turkovic, selected her to pursue a special course in advanced studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg where she met and played under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt. She also participated in the programs of the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France both as a student and teacher, and was awarded the Maurice Ravel prize for Chamber Music.

Catherine Marchese is actively pursuing a career as a bassoon soloist and chamber musician. She is the first woman instrumental soloist to have performed on the Vienna Opera stage, performing both the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto (RV 484), and the Ciranda das Sete Notas of Villa Lobos with the Prague Symphony under the baton of Carl Melles. It is also as a soloist that she has performed with both the Norwegian and Polish Chamber Orchestras, the Billings Symphony, and in numerous festivals such as Reims, Strasbourg, La Baule, L’Abbaye de la Pree, Prades, Engadine, Bern (Suisse), Newport (USA), Lockenhaus (Austria), and Santander (Spain), to name a few. Her performance of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris at the Salle Pleyel was recorded “live” on compact disc. During the Mozart Bicentennial she received accolades for this same concerto from both the press and the public at an open-air concert in Naples which was also broadcast over radio.

In Paris, the composer Jean Francaix personally chose her as the soloist for his Bassoon Concerto and subsequently wrote and dedicated a piece specifically for her. Other composers who have written specifically for her include Emile Naoumoff, Francoise Choveaux, David Canfield, and Adrian Williams. She was also chosen to premier the Glenn Gould Bassoon Sonata both on French radio and on a Sony Classical CD. Some of her other recordings include, “Un Apres-midi aux Maisonettes” (Sude productions), Bassoon Recital (Gega), Celtic Influences (Gega), and a disc of Satie works (Saphir Productions), which was also filmed for television by the French classical music channel “Muzzik.”

She is currently principal bassoonist in the Bloomington Symphony and the Bloomington Pops, and enjoys frequent freelance engagements in the Indianapolis area including the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony.

Parallel to her performing career, Catherine Marchese enjoys a teaching career as well. In addition to music, she has earned degrees in language education, and became the first and only teacher to achieve National Board Certification in language development in Indiana where she is often asked to lead conferences and professional development activities on this subject. She has taught at the International School of Paris, The Academy International at Rangiport (France) as well as for the French public schools. She presently resides in Bloomington, and teaches for the Monroe County Community School Corporation. She also enjoys teaching her private studio of next generation bassoonists as well as coaching for the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra.
